5 activities for ages 2 to 4 at home

By Las Petu Exploradoras · 4 min read · 2–4 years

Choose one activity and follow it while your child is interested. You do not need to finish the list in a day. Demonstrate first, offer two choices and let the child respond by pointing, speaking or copying. Ages are suggestions: adapt each idea to what your family enjoys.

Have these ready

  • Paper, three crayons and a box.
  • Three large toys in different colors.

1. A color hunt

Practice noticing and naming colors in an activity of about five minutes.

  1. Place three large toys in view and show a red crayon.
  2. Ask which one matches that color. If none is red, look around the room together.
  3. Finish by drawing a mark in the color you found.

A useful detail: Give your child time to look before repeating the question. Pointing is participation too.

2. Animals on the move

This game invites children to copy and recognize animals without reading.

  1. Make a trunk with your arm and say: I am an elephant.
  2. Invite your child to copy you from their own spot. Then try a bird and a turtle.
  3. Let your child choose the last animal and copy them.

3. A cloud for Nubi

Use a sheet from the kit or draw a large cloud. The aim is to explore drawing and talk together.

  1. Offer two crayons and let your child choose one.
  2. Draw lines, dots or a face for Nubi.
  3. Ask where the cloud wants to travel and add their idea to the drawing.

4. One, two, three into the box

Connect number words with quantities while putting away three toys.

  1. Put the toys in a row.
  2. Put them away one at a time and count together slowly.
  3. Take one out and ask how many are left; look inside to check.

5. How does the cloud feel?

A drawn face can start a conversation, but an expression alone does not always tell us how someone feels.

  1. Draw one smiling cloud and another with tears.
  2. Ask what might have happened. Welcome different stories.
  3. Imagine a way to support the cloud, such as listening or sitting nearby.

When you finish, put supplies away together. If an activity does not catch your child’s interest, switch to another or leave it for a different day.
