How to plan a 90-minute kids’ birthday party

By Las Petu Exploradoras · 4 min read · For grown-ups

A simple schedule helps you prepare and leave time to enjoy the party. This 90-minute plan is a flexible starting point: shorten games, allow more time for food or switch activities to suit the group.

Have these ready

  • Guest list, pencil and a rough budget.
  • Your chosen kit, supplies for two games and drinking water.

1. Decide the essentials

Before choosing decorations, think about your space, guest count and ages.

  1. Choose a date, duration and who will accompany the children.
  2. Split your budget between food, supplies and decorations. Use what you already own first.
  3. Ask families about allergies, accessibility and other needs as you plan the welcome.

2. Prepare three areas

A party can work in a small space when each activity has a clear place.

  1. Creative table: paper, crayons and ready-to-use supplies.
  2. Play space: clear of objects that get in the way of movement.
  3. Quiet corner: drawing paper and a comfortable place to rest with a grown-up.

3. One possible schedule

You do not need to announce every minute. Use this sequence to have supplies ready.

  1. 0–15 min: welcome and free coloring. 15–30 min: an animal or color game.
  2. 30–45 min: food and water. 45–60 min: a crown or picture to take home.
  3. 60–75 min: cake and a song. 75–90 min: quiet play, collecting artwork and goodbyes.

4. Adjust for age

The group’s interest matters more than following an exact clock.

  1. For ages 2–4, demonstrate each game and use short turns. Offer the option to join with a grown-up.
  2. For ages 5–7, add clues, questions or a shared creation.
  3. For mixed ages, offer two ways to join: point or explain, color or invent a story.

5. Prepare the finish

A calm finish gives everyone time to collect artwork and say goodbye.

  1. Prepare a spot to collect each guest’s creations.
  2. Use kit labels for a thank-you message.
  3. Save leftover supplies for a home activity another day.

The Birthdays planner includes a checklist and an estimate of coloring sheets, labels and boxes of crayons based on the number of children.
